Air Mauritius introduces dedicated policies for bereaved families and cancer patients
Since 05 August 2025, Air Mauritius has introduced two policies dedicated to supporting its passengers through difficult moments:
1) A bereavement policy allowing for refunds, rebooking, and special baggage handling in the event of the death of an Air Mauritius passenger or a member of his/her immediate family.
2) For passengers with cancer, a procedure for changing travel dates, offering them flexibility when they need to travel abroad for medical treatment.
Eligibility for the bereavement policy applies to: (1) the demise of the passenger before or during the trip, (2) the trip of a close relative before or after the demise, or (3) the demise of an immediate family member requiring the cancellation or modification of the ticket.
This bereavement policy includes many benefits, such as a refund without penalty, even if the ticket was originally non-refundable. Free rebooking or exchange of the ticket for another destination is also possible. No additional fees will be charged for travel in the same cabin. In addition, the accompanying passenger will be entitled to carry the deceased person's hand luggage and checked baggage free of charge.
To take advantage of these facilities, bereaved relatives must present a death certificate and proof of family relationship (birth certificate, marriage certificate, or any other legal document). Immediate family members include spouse, common-law partner, parents (biological or step), children, grandchildren, siblings, grandparents, or legal guardian.
Requests should be made at Air Mauritius counters or offices abroad, as well as at Travel agencies that have already been notified of these new measures.
Assistance for cancer patients
This measure aims to ease the logistical constraints on patients and their families in these difficult circumstances.
Cases will be considered upon presentation of a medical certificate stating the cancer diagnosis and indicating the medical necessity of changing the travel date. Passengers who need to travel abroad for cancer treatment may then request a change of travel date, subject to certain conditions. Ticket refunds will be made in accordance with the original fare rules.
Revalidation is authorised in any booking class available in the same cabin for the patient and any accompanying person travelling under the same booking reference (PNR). These passengers will not be subject to any fare adjustment, regardless of the initial fare or booking class. The baggage allowance will apply according to the initial fare conditions of the ticket.
