Dangerous Goods

• Ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles as well as flares and fireworks.

• On Air Mauritius ATR aircraft, the carriage of any firearms, weapons or ammunitions poses a security threat and is hence not allowed under any conditions. 

• Disabling devices such as mace and pepper spray containing an irritant or incapacitation substance.

• Electro shock weapons (e.g. Tasers) containing dangerous goods such as explosives compressed gases, lithium batteries.

• Security type 'attaché cases', cash boxes, cash bags incorporating dangerous goods such as lithium batteries and/or pyrotechnic material.  

• Personal medical oxygen devices that utilize liquid oxygen.  

• Battery-powered lighters powered by a lithium ion or lithium metal battery (e.g. laser plasma lighters, tesla coil lighters, flux lighters, arc lighters and double arc lighters) without a safety cap or means of protection against unintentional activation.

• Safety matches or a cigarette lighter that does not contain un-absorbed liquid fuel.

• Lighter fuel and lighter refills.  

• 'Strike anywhere' matches, “Blue flame” or “Cigar” lighters or lighters powered by a lithium battery without a safety cap or means of protection against unintentional activation. 

• Personal mobility devices such as air wheel, solo wheel, hover board, mini-Segway and balance wheel. However, to avoid inconveniencing passengers with reduced mobility, powered mobility aids such as wheel chairs are allowed.

• Any damaged, defective or recalled lithium batteries and devices.

Note: One small packet of safety matches or a cigarette lighter that does not contain unabsorbed liquid fuel, other than liquefied gas, may be carried on your person for your own use. However, these must be carried on your own person at all times and not placed in checked or hand baggage at any time.

• Ammunition (cartridges for weapons) securely packaged (in Division 1.4S, UN0012 or UN0014 only) not exceeding 5 kg (11 lb) gross weight per person for their own use, excluding ammunition containing explosive or incendiary projectiles. Allowances for more than one passenger cannot be combined. Passengers must find out if special import regulations apply in your destination country. Also, while firearms and weapons are allowed to be carried in checked baggage on aircraft other than ATRs, we request you to communicate to us your intention to carry these types of firearms and ammunition at least 48 hours prior to your departure. Please note that details of the applicable procedure for the carriage of such sensitive items shall be communicated to you by staff at our counters or travel agents. 

• Camping stoves and fuel combustible containers which contained a flammable liquid fuel may be transported provided that the fuel tank and/or container has been completely emptied of all the liquid fuel and that measures have been taken to eliminate the danger.  

• Wheelchairs or other battery-powered mobility aids with spillable batteries, non-spillable wet batteries, Nickel-Metal Hydride or dry batteries and Lithium batteries. As a corollary, all wheelchairs or other mobility devices are accepted subject to:  

• the battery being disconnected,

• the battery terminals being protected to avoid accidental short circuits,

• the battery being securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid with terminals isolated or

• the batteries being removed by user if possible.

The following items must only be carried in hand baggage and are not allowed in checked baggage:

• Carriage of power banks in checked-in baggage is strictly prohibited.

• Mercury barometers or thermometers carried by a representative of a government weather bureau or similar official agency

• Fuel cell systems and spare fuel cartridges powering portable electronic devices (for example, cameras, cellular phones, laptop computers and camcorders)

• Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) containing lithium batteries

• Power banks and all items containing lithium metal or lithium-ion cells or batteries, must be individually protected to avoid short circuits by placing them in the original packaging, by taping the terminals or placing each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch.  

• No more than one spare lithium or lithium-ion cells or batteries for consumer electronic devices. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. Each installed or spare battery must not exceed:

  • For lithium metal or lithium alloy batteries, a lithium content of not more than 2 g; or

  • For lithium-ion batteries, a watt-hour rating of not more than 100 Wh.

  • Only one power bank not exceeding 100 Wh is allowed per passenger and must not be used or charged on board. Storage in overhead compartment is strictly forbidden.

Important Guidelines for E-Cigarettes and Power Banks

• Power banks must be stored safely during the flight, either in your handbag placed under the seat in front of you or in the seat pocket during the flight.

• E-Cigarettes must be carried in hand luggage only.

• Power banks must not be used to charge personal devices while onboard.

• Do not charge power banks using aircraft’s power supply (USB ports).

• Power banks or spare lithium batteries must be individually packed in a protective pouch to prevent short circuits.

• The maximum allowed watt-hour rating for power banks or spare lithium batteries is 100Wh or less

• Carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice) in quantities not exceeding 2.5 kg (5 lb) per passenger when used to pack perishables, not subject to the Dangerous Goods Regulations, in checked baggage or hand baggage, provided the package permits the release of carbon dioxide gas. Operator approval is required. Dry ice in checked baggage must be marked « dry ice » or « carbon dioxide, solid » with the indication that the net weight is 2.5 kg or less. 

• Avalanche rescue backpack, one (1) per passenger, equipped with a pyrotechnic trigger mechanism containing less than 200 mg net of Division 1.4S and less than 250 mg of compressed gas in Division 2.2. The backpack must be packed so it cannot be accidentally activated. The airbags within the backpacks must be fitted with pressure relief valves. 

• Insulated packages containing refrigerated liquid nitrogen (dry shipper), fully absorbed in a porous material and intended for transport, at low temperatures, of non-dangerous products, provided the design of the insulated packaging would not allow the build-up of pressure within the container and would not permit the release of any refrigerated liquid nitrogen irrespective of the orientation of the insulated packaging. 

• Non-flammable gas cylinder fitted into a life jacket containing carbon dioxide or other suitable gas in Division 2.2, up to two (2) small cylinders per passenger, and up to two (2) spare cartridges. 

• Oxygen or air gaseous, small cylinders required for medical use.  

• Aerosols in Division 2.2, with no subsidiary risk, for sporting or home use. 

• Non-radioactive medicinal or toilet articles (including aerosols) such as hairsprays, perfumes, colognes and medicines containing alcohol. The total net quantity of these articles must not exceed 2 kg (4.4 lb) or 2 litres (4 pints), and the net quantity of each single article must not exceed 0.5 kg (1 lb) or 0.5 litre (1 pint). Release valves on aerosols must be protected by a cap or other suitable means to prevent inadvertent release of content.

• Alcoholic beverages, when in retail packaging, containing more than 24% but not more than 70% alcohol by volume, in receptacles not exceeding 5 litres, with a total net quantity per person of 5 litres.  

• Non-flammable, non-toxic gas cylinders worn for the operation of mechanical limbs and spare cylinders of a similar size to ensure adequate supply for the duration of the journey.  

• Consumer electronic devices containing lithium or lithium ion cells or batteries, such as watches, calculating machines, cameras, cellular phones, lap-top computers, camcorders, when carried by passengers or crew for personal use.  

• Hair curlers containing hydrocarbon gas, up to one (1) per passenger or crew member, provided that the safety cover is securely fitted over the heating element. They may not be used on board the aircraft at any time. Gas refills for hair curlers are not permitted in hand baggage or checked baggage.  

• Medical or clinical thermometer, which contains mercury, one (1) per passenger for personal use and must be in a protective case.
